Promotion of Sports Events
PETRONAS’ other contributions to sports and recreation are founded on the goal to help boost national pride and spirit on the sports field. At the national level, we have been sponsoring Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) meets since 1988. This event is an inter-state multi-sports competition for athletes below 21 years of age. It aims to discover new sporting talents in Malaysia at district and state levels who have the calibre and potential to represent the country in the regional and international arenas.

Besides SUKMA, we have also sponsored a number of prestigious international sporting events in Malaysia. Among the more notable events are:
International motorsports: the PETRONAS Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix
The 1998 Commonwealth Games, one of the largest sporting events ever held in Malaysia
The United Internationale Motonautique (UIM) F1 Powerboat Malaysia Grand Prix - sponsored since 2001
The Royal Langkawi International Regatta - sponsored since its inception in 2003
The Le Tour de Langkawi, which is a part of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Asia Tour
The F1 Equestrian Show-jumping Competition
