PETRONAS is delighted to announce the winning solution for our 9th Technology Challenge: Safe & Durable Boat Fender Technology.
Boat landing facilities are designed for personnel transfer from marine support vessel to offshore platforms and vice versa. Frequent boat impact can damage the structures and may pose safety hazard to offshore personnel involved, causing possible disruption to operation activities. PETRONAS Technology Challenge 9 aspires to seek a state-of-the-art solution for boat fender system with minimal installation and low maintenance cost and reliable in resisting boat impact energy.
The challenge received an encouraging participation from both local and international companies. Upon a comprehensive assessment by a panel of internal subject matter experts, TGUARD-50 Fender proposed by Bermuda Subsea (M) Sdn Bhd has been chosen as the winning solution. The solution provides a high impact energy absorption, allowing ease of installation and maintenance while being cost-efficient.

PETRONAS applauds Gasconsult Limited for winning the tenth Technology Challenge namely, Compact Refrigeration System for Natural Gas.
PETRONAS has recognised the issue on large footprint, complex with heavy equipment which are challenging for offshore applications resulting in unattractive economic to overall projects. In our hunt for a compact refrigeration system for natural gas processing, we found Zero Refrigerant LNG (ZR-LNG) proposed by Gasconsult Limited to be the most befit solution that is compact and comes with minimal equipment count.
Gasconsult ZR-LNG process is highly differentiated; unlike competing processes, it uses no external refrigerants; just natural gas feed as the refrigerant medium in an optimised system of expanders. This eliminates refrigerant storage and transfer systems and the process equipment used to extract refrigerant components from the feed gas as required for mixed and multi-refrigerant cycles. This also reduces equipment count, capital cost and footprint.
The challenge received an encouraging participation from both local and international companies. Upon comprehensive assessment by a panel of internal subject matter experts in PETRONAS, Gasconsult triumphs over many other encouraging participations by proposing ZR-LNG Technology.

Technology Challenge 8: Jiangnan Environmental Protection Group Inc (JNG)
Congratulations Jiangnan Environmental Protection Group (JNG) for winning the eighth installment of the PETRONAS Technology Challenge namely, Thermal Oxidizer Flue Gas SOx Emission Reduction.
In our quest for an innovative and cost effective solution to further reduce SOx emission, we found Efficient Ammonia Desulfurization (EADS) proposed by JNG to be the most suitable solution where the technology is capable to reduce SOx level to more stringent requirement.
In Malaysia, the regulatory requirement aims to regulate emissions of air pollutants from industrial activities including oil and gas, power plants, waste fuel plants and asphalt mixing plants. Limiting sulfur oxides emissions reduces air pollution and results in a cleaner environment.
Upon comprehensive assessment by a panel of internal subject matter experts in PETRONAS, JNG triumphs over many other encouraging participations from both local and international companies.

PETRONAS is delighted to announce the winning solution for our Technology Challenge No. 7 - Technology Solution for Crack-Resistant, Liquid-Tight and Maintenance-Free Tank Sump and Dispenser Sump at PETRONAS’ fuel stations.
Tank sump and dispenser sump are designed to provide access to equipment located below ground of PETRONAS’ petrol station and act as containment to prevent liquids from being released into the environment. However, the sump is usually exposed to external pressure mainly due to soil movements, high water table area and high-load above the ground that could cause mechanical failures of the equipment. PETRONAS Technology Challenge 7 aspires to seek innovative solutions that will improve the operations of PETRONAS’ fuel stations while delivering our award winning product to customers.
The challenge received an encouraging participation from both local and international companies. Upon comprehensive assessment by a panel of internal subject matter experts, Fiber Composite Crack-Resistance, Liquid-Tight and Maintenance-Free Dispenser Sump by Atlas Composite Technologies Sdn Bhd has been chosen as the winning solution which provides higher strength to the tank and dispenser sump, allowing ease of maintenance and piping while being cost-efficient.

PETRONAS is proud to announce the winner of Technology Challenge No. 6 – Autonomous Drone Capable of Performing Ultrasonic-Thickness (UT) Measurement at Height. The Challenge is crafted specially for local universities to harness the collaboration between PETRONAS and the institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.
Drones have vast application in the oil & gas industry to potentially improve the productivity and minimise human exposure to hazardous situation. In the case of UT measurement, drones can be applied to far reaching areas without the use of scaffolding which resulted in minimum human intervention hence accelerating the measurement process and data quality. PETRONAS is exploring means to push the advancement of this application by having an autonomous capability to the drone while doing UT measurement. By having this technology, PETRONAS can set a high level of operational excellence and compliance to HSE standards.
The Challenge had received a total of 17 proposals from 12 higher learning institutions in Malaysia. The proposals went through a series of evaluation that resulted to a shortlisting of five (5) best proposals. The finalists were then given assistance in the form of drone and financial aid to demonstrate their capability during the Obstacle Course event.
Al-Khawarizmi team from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was announced the winner after scoring the highest marks during the Obstacle Course event in PETRONAS Research facility. Their programming skills were tested and excelled to ensure the drone achieves stability and is capable of maneuvering the obstructions.
PETRONAS applauds Al-Khawarizmi for their achievement and PETRONAS will collaborate with the winner for further development to mature this into a scalable solution for actual environment. Our heartiest gratitude to the teams especially the student who participated. We are indeed delighted to see the breadth of young talents in Malaysia and certainly looking forward to your participation in the next PETRONAS Technology Challenge.
CUI is a serious problem in the oil and gas industry that may result in catastrophic consequences on the assets. The most challenging issue of CUI is the hidden substrate and localised damages it causes. Currently there are inspection tools but with certain limitations on detection capability, non-accessibility to the susceptible locations and the need to remove insulation material. The PETRONAS Technology Challenge aspires to identify an effective, robust and flexible inspection tool to address these problems.
PETRONAS’ 4th Technology Challenge received a total of 33 proposals consisting of multiple inspection techniques such as acoustic emission, electromagnetic and radiographic technologies from eight (8) countries. Evaluated by a panel of internal subject matter experts, all proposals underwent a comprehensive assessment to identify the winning solution.
The winning solution is an integrated non-intrusive inspection technique which detects active anomaly with auxiliary testing and advanced data processing known as Phonon Diagnostic Technique (PDT). It is able to work under operating conditions, provides rapid screening, accessibility to complex piping area and bigger inspection coverage while minimising maintenance scope for insulation de-lagging.

PETRONAS congratulates TiME MARINE Services Sdn Bhd on winning our 3rd installment of the Technology Challenge of Onshore Hydrocarbon Recovery from Sludge.
PETRONAS has recognised the issue of waste management as a perennial concern during crude oil processing. In this process, a waste composite, alternatively known as oily sludge, is generated during the various stages of crude oil operations from exploration to refining. Unfortunately, the practice today is such that the oily sludge is disposed without further treatment. Earnest efforts should be focused on the current technologies of oil recovery to improve oil utilisation and efficiency in order to reduce environmental burdens with regards to sludge disposal.
The PETRONAS Technology Challenge was launched to identify an innovative solution to the issue. After rigorous research, TiME MARINE Services Sdn Bhd proposed to us a solution consisting of a biodegradable chemical and mechanical technologies that can effectively recover hydrocarbon, water and other solids from the oily sludge. The proposed solution will also see to the reduction of cost and minimisation of original disposal to the third party waste management body.
Evaluated by panels of subject matter experts, the proposed solution has undergone comprehensive assessment in order to finally be identified as one that has successfully met the objectives of the challenge.
