KUALA LUMPUR, 28 September 2015 – PETRONAS hosted a welcome reception in honour of 120 students from six schools representing their respective states at the PETRONAS All About Youth (AAY) programme grand finale in Kuala Lumpur on 30 September.
The finalists for this year’s PETRONAS AAY are SMK Tanjung Datok, Johor; SMK Bukit Baru, Melaka; SMK Padang Midin, Terengganu; SMK Tendong, Kelantan; SMK St. Teresa, Kuching; and SMK Tamparuli, Sabah. The schools were selected to represent their states after the preliminary judging held on 10-11 August.
In line with the objective of the programme, all teams had presented projects that would bring significant impact and benefit the community as well as environment.
In welcoming the participants, PETRONAS Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Liz Kamaruddin thanked and congratulated the finalists for their hard work and commitment throughout the programme.
“You have proven that everyone can make a difference just by being aware about what your community needs and do your part by being proactive and creative in providing solutions.”
Also present at the dinner to share about their experience in making a difference were the PETRONAS YAMAHA-CKJ team riders, Mohd Affendi Rosli and Ahmad Afif Amran. Among the key messages shared by Afif and Affendi were the importance of perseverance and determination as key qualities to achieve success.
Prior to the final presentation of their projects, all finalists will be treated to a tour of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS and other fun-filled activities.
PETRONAS AAY finalist will be competing for a grand prize of RM50,000 worth of school refurbishment fund, while each team member will receive RM1,000 deposited into individual National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) accounts as well as RM200 worth of prizes.
During the six-week competition, the state finalists were each given RM2,000 to carry out their community projects. The students were mentored by PETRONAS volunteers, or “buddies”, who guided and engaged them in brainstorming sessions, time and financial management as well as presentation skills.
The PETRONAS AAY programme, which has been endorsed by the Ministry of Education is designed to nurture talent and leadership skills among students through projects in the areas of social development, community wellbeing and environment.
