2017 Media Release - 13 Oct

GABON, 13 October 2017 – About 1,000 students from Public Secondary School of Avorbam in Akanda City, Libreville are now able to experience an enhanced learning experience following the completion of selective facilities upgrading at the public school undertaken by PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national oil and gas corporation.

The initiative, implemented by PETRONAS’ subsidiary PC Gabon Upstream S.A. (PCGUSA) comprised the upgrading of a multi-purpose court for basketball and volleyball, as well as an IT and resource room that is fully equipped with computers, Internet connectivity and a project presentation area.

PCGUSA today held an official ceremony to mark the completion of the initiative at the school. The event was attended Francine NKEZE, Chief of Staff, on behalf of Minister of Petroleum & Hydrocarbons, Gabon, Vincent de Paul MASSASSA, General Manager of Hydrocarbures Department (DGH), and Didier PENDJE, General Manager for Community Service representing the Minister of Education.

Speaking at the event, PETRONAS Vice President of Exploration, Upstream, Emeliana Rice-Oxley expressed her hope that the upgraded facilities would help provide a more conducive learning environment for the students.

“Our community initiatives in Gabon are part of PETRONAS’ Corporate Social Investment effort focusing on education, community development and well-being. Wherever we are, PETRONAS places equal importance on both commercial growth and social development of the communities in which we operate,” she said.

Last year, PETRONAS refurbished the canteen and lavatories at the Belle Vue II School in Libreville, and also contributed a potable water tank, fire extinguishers and first aid kits to the school.

PETRONAS ventured into Gabon in 2014 when it signed its first Production Sharing Contract (PSC) with the republic for Block Likuale N0 G4-248 (F14). The block is located about 160 kilometers from Mayumba, south of Gabon, in water depths ranging from 2,000 metres to 3,000 metres.
