Kuala Lumpur, 14 August 2015 – For 120 students from six schools around the country, next month will be a time of reckoning as they have been shortlisted for the grand finale of PETRONAS ‘All About Youth’ Programme 2015 after beating 90 schools at the state level competition.
The six schools – SMK Tanjung Datuk from Johor; SMK Bukit Baru, Melaka; SMK Tendong, Kelantan; SMK Padang Midin, Terengganu; SMK Tamparuli, Sabah; and SMK St Teresa, Sarawak will be competing for the championship title at the grand finale in Kuala Lumpur on 30 September 2015.
The PETRONAS All About Youth Programme, which has been endorsed by the Ministry of Education, is designed to nurture the students’ talents and leadership skills through projects in the areas of social development, community wellbeing and environment.
PETRONAS Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Liz Kamaruddin said, “PETRONAS All About Youth Programme aims to encourage participants to be well-rounded youths, equip them with leadership skills and embed Good Samaritan principles. We want to see them contribute to the development of their community and ultimately safeguard the nation’s social and economic wellbeing.”
The competition was first mooted in 2014, and this year’s edition began in March involving participation from 1,800 form four students from 90 schools in Melaka, Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak.
PETRONAS provided each school team, made up of twenty students each, with a start-up fund of RM2,000. A PETRONAS volunteer served as a “buddy” to each team to guide and engage them in brainstorming on project management, time and financial management as well as presentation skills throughout the length of the competition.
At the end of the seven weeks, the teams were required to make their final presentation on their projects at the state-level finals. Judging will be based on creativity and their project’s originality, impact on community, sustainability and clarity of presentation.
The grand finale winning school will receive a grand prize of RM50,000 and each team member will receive RM1,200 deposited into their individual bank accounts listed under the National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN). Individuals in the second and third prize categories will have RM1,000 and RM800 deposited into their SSPN accounts respectively.
