Technology Challenge 19

Innovative Technology Solutions for Downhole CO2 Logging Assessment in Support of PETRONAS CCS Agenda

Participate Now

Background of the challenge

PETRONAS is seeking for an integrated technology solutions in terms of simulation or forward modelling results (short term) and new innovative measurement/hardware system (long term) that can measure and quantify CO2 at downhole in-situ condition in virgin, producing, and depleted reservoirs, with a focus on potential CO2 re-injection and storage. The solutions can be derived from the existing technology owned by the vendor or can be new and innovative solutions uniquely adopted and patented by the vendor.

Request for proposal description

In fulfilling such expectation, the proposed technology solution should meet the following requirements:

Scope A: Modelling (to be assessed during challenge period)

  1. Accuracy: Model performance is benchmarked against standard methods like fluid sampling and PVT lab analysis. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is used to assess detection strength. Accuracy reflects how well the model quantifies pure CO2 saturation and volume.
  2. Distinguishing gases: Model applies physical and chemical properties to distinguish hydrocarbon gas from CO2 during logging measurements.
  3. CO2 quantification: odel uses physics-based principles and advanced techniques to measure CO2 saturation and volume with high precision.
  4. Reliability & error control: Model reliability is evaluated by minimizing error margins to ensure consistent and dependable results.
  5. Data processing workflow: Includes structured database, benchmark references, calibrated models, and workflows to process raw data and quantify CO2 saturation and volume effectively.

Scope B: Hardware –measurement or logging tool prototype (to be concluded after challenge period

  1. Ease to operate and compliance to HSE: Tool is designed for easy operation and complies with safety standards including Malaysia AELB licensing, lifting, transport, and rig procedures.
  2. Versatility: Tool is portable and adaptable to various borehole conditions, casing sizes, fluid environments, and conveyance systems. Compatible with third-party services.
  3. Functional applicability: Tool operates effectively across different CO₂ concentrations and well environments.
  4. Measurement applicability: Tool provides relevant and reliable logging outputs to detect and quantify CO2 concentration, volume, and saturation.
  5. Calibration/ validation: Tool undergoes calibration and validation to reduce measurement errors and improve accuracy.
  6. Technology maturity: Tool has demonstrated proven performance and reliability in similar field applications.
