Technology Challenge 19

Innovative Technology Solutions for Downhole CO2 Logging Assessment in Support of PETRONAS CCS Agenda

Participate Now

Background of the challenge

PETRONAS is seeking for an integrated technology solutions in terms of simulation or forward modelling results (short term) and new innovative measurement/hardware system (long term) that can measure and quantify CO2 at downhole in-situ condition in virgin, producing, and depleted reservoirs, with a focus on potential CO2 re-injection and storage. The solutions can be derived from the existing technology owned by the vendor or can be new and innovative solutions uniquely adopted and patented by the vendor.

Request for proposal description

In fulfilling such expectation, the proposed technology solution should meet the following requirements:

Scope A: Modelling

  1. Distinguishing Gases: Develop a model (existing or new) to accurately identify and separate hydrocarbon gas from CO2.
  2. Measuring CO2: Create a model (existing or new) to precisely measure CO2 saturation and volume at downhole reservoir condition.
  3. Accuracy: Ensure the model's accuracy by comparing it with existing methods like fluid sampling and PVT lab results as calibration point.
  4. Reliability: Minimize errors in the model to provide consistent and dependable results.
  5. Error Management: Implement techniques to correct and reduce uncertainties and errors in the model performance.
  6. Data Processing: Use of a reliable database, benchmark and workflow to process raw data and quantify CO2 saturation and volume.

Scope B: Hardware –measurement or logging tool prototype

  1. Ease of handling: Ensure the logging tool is easy to operate and comply with HSSE regulations.
  2. Versatility: Ensure the logging tool is transportable and suitable for various well conditions.
  3. Effectiveness: Ensure the tool works effectively in varying CO2 concentration and well environments.
  4. Calibration: Perform effective calibration and validation to minimize errors in measurement.
  5. Signal to noise ratio (SNR): Ensure the tool can detect CO2 presence and quantify saturation as well as volume at various DOI with strong signal.
  6. Proven Performance: Use of an existing or a new tool with a proven track record for downhole CO2 measurement and quantification.
