Smart valve technology to mitigate piping and pipeline valve passing (TC18)

2023 Success Stories - 2 Dec

Pain Points:

Valve passing affects approximately 80% of installed valves in PETRONAS due to debris accumulation from corrosion or erosion. Current technology only measures the severity of passing and allows rectification during shutdowns, with no existing solutions to mitigate valve passing without shutdown. This issue poses a severe HSE risk, as escaping flammable gas or liquid hydrocarbons can lead to pipeline explosions, toxic gas releases, and loss of equipment control due to instrument air loss.

Requirements:

The anticipated technology should eliminate or reduce valve passing for various valve types without stopping operations, applicable to both gas and liquid hydrocarbon lines, and suitable for both metal and soft-seated valves, adhering to PETRONAS (PTG) standards.

Winner:

No Winning Solution: Despite the participation and effort of those who submitted solutions, none met the necessary requirements for this challenge.
