PETRONAS Installs Heaviest Reactor for Refinery at Pengerang Integrated Complex

PENGERANG21 September 2016 – PETRONAS today has successfully installed its heaviest diesel hydrotreater unit (DHT) reactor for its currently-under-construction refinery within the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), here.

"The DHT reactor is an important component of our refinery and critical to the production of Euro 5 Diesel, which will be legislated in Malaysia by September 2020," said PETRONAS Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn Bhd (PRPC), Ir Dr Colin Wong Hee Huing.

"Therefore, its successful installation not only signifies another important milestone, but also complements the overall development of the PIC which is poised for successful start-up in the first quarter of 2019," he added.

The DHT reactor, fabricated in Italy, measures 44.26 metres in height, with a diameter of 6.26 metres and a 17.4 centimetre-thick wall, designed for pressure of 129 bar(g).

"The challenge for the installation of this reactor is, it is extremely heavy at 1,057 tonnes, which is equivalent to about 2 fully loaded Airbus A380," said Ir Dr Colin Wong.

The lifting required amongst the largest ring cranes in the world. The Mammoet PT50 crane, capable of lifting a load of up to 2,000 tonnes, took 20 days to be assembled for the preparation of the reactor installation.

Present to witness the installation were Ambassador of Spain to Malaysia and Brunei, His Excellency Mr Carlos Domínguez Díaz; Tecnicas Reunidas' Chief Operations Officer, Mr Felipe Revenga Lopez; Department of Occupational Safety and Health's (DOSH) Director of Industrial Safety, Ir Ibrahim Md Dol; Kota Tinggi District Council's (MDKT) President, Encik Fizwan Dato' Hj Mohd Rashidi; and, Construction Industry Development Board's (CIDB) General Manager for Personnel Registration, Encik Abd Jaiz Abd Aziz.

At the ceremony, Ir Dr Colin Wong also expressed thanks to all parties involved for the continuous support in the development of the PIC.

Upon completion, PIC's refinery will have a refining capacity of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd).
