PETRONAS’ Pengerang Co-generation Plant Receives the First Gas Turbine
Media Releases

Pengerang, Johor7 June 2016 – PETRONAS received the first gas turbine for its Pengerang Co-generation Plant (PCP) located within the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) here, today.

The arrival of the gas turbine signifies another milestone in the development of the PCP, which is expected to commence commercial operation by June 2017. This also complements the overall development progress of the PIC that is poised to achieve the first refinery start-up in the first quarter of 2019.

The SGT5-8000H turbine, measuring 13.5 metre in length, 5.5 metre high and 5.9 metre wide, is similar in weight as a fully-fuelled A380 Airbus. It had travelled six weeks from Germany to Malaysia on board the MISC Berhad-operated vessel MV Annette, before arriving at the Material Offloading Facility (MOLF) port in Tanjung Setapa, Johor.

The arrival of the gas turbine was marked with a ceremony held at the MOLF port. Present at the event were Pengerang Power Sdn. Bhd. Chairman, Ir. Pramod Kumar Karunakaran; Pengerang Power Sdn. Bhd. Chief Executive Officer, Ir. Liew Yuen Choong; and PETRONAS Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (PRPC), Ir. Dr. Colin Wong Hee Huing.

"A total of four gas turbines of the same kind will be installed at the PCP, which will be done in phases. The first unit is expected to go online into commercial operation by June 2017," said Ir. Pramod, adding that the other three turbines will be arriving between July and September this year.

"Inclusive of a back-up capacity to ensure reliability of supply, the co-generation plant will have a nominal capacity of 1,729MW. Apart from generating power, the plant will also produce 1,480 tonnes of steam hourly for petrochemical plants within the complex." he said

The PCP will be one of the biggest co-generation facilities in the region, implementing Siemens' latest gas turbine H-class technology together with a unique dual steam turbine configuration to ensure the highest efficiency.

The engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the PCP is being carried out by a consortium, consisting Siemens AG, Siemens Malaysia and MMC Engineering Services Sdn. Bhd.
