A Decade of Giving Beyond Chinese New Year: Pengerang Integrated Complex Uplifts 2,000 Lives

2026 Events - 24 Feb

Over the past decade, Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) has positively impacted more than 2,000 members of underprivileged families in the Chinese community in Pengerang, through its annual Chinese New Year Community Programme.

Starting as a simple festive outreach, it has evolved into a meaningful platform for sustained community engagement, reflecting PIC’s role as a long-term partner to the communities surrounding its operations.

This year’s celebration, ushering in the Year of the Horse, a Chinese zodiac symbol of strength and resilience, the programme took on added significance. Beyond its usual contributions, 150 selected beneficiaries received specially prepared “Prosperity Care Packs”, filled with essential groceries and daily necessities, aimed at easing the financial burden of festive preparations and helping families welcome the Lunar New Year with greater comfort and peace of mind.

The contributions were personally handed over during a special dinner, accompanied by a vibrant lion dance performance and the traditional yee sang tossing ceremony, fostering a spirit of togetherness between PIC and the local community.

This community programme is made possible through a strategic collaboration between PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (PRPC), Pengerang Refining Company Sdn. Bhd. and Pengerang Petrochemical Company Sdn. Bhd., (collectively known as PRefChem), Pengerang Terminals (Two) Sdn. Bhd. (PT2SB), and Pengerang Biorefinery Sdn. Bhd. (PBSB), reflecting a unified industry commitment to community welfare.

Johor State Education and Information Committee Chairman, Yang Berhormat Tuan Aznan Tamin commended PIC for its consistent efforts in uplifting the community. “My appreciation to the industry partners, who continue to play a responsible role in supporting the local community. Programmes such as this reflects the shared values and strong sense of social responsibility needed to foster lasting harmony within our society,” he said.

Since its establishment, PIC has maintained steadfast commitment to growing alongside the local community. Beyond seasonal assistance, the complex has implemented various initiatives over the years under the #ForPengerang initiatives, including social educational, and community development programmes designed to create sustainable long-term impact, strengthen livelihoods, and expands opportunities for the people of Pengerang.

Chief Executive Officer of PRPC, Datuk Md Shah Mahmood said, “The programme reflects PIC’s principle of progressing together with the community, highlighting that meaningful engagement goes far beyond seasonal contributions. Community engagement is a sustained commitment. As PIC grows, we remain equally focused on ensuring the surrounding communities advance with us, gaining greater opportunities and enhanced well-being.”

Sungai Rengit Chinese Community Leader, Lim Kim Hua, echoed similar sentiments. “Programmes like this demonstrate that the industry stands together with the community, not only driving economic growth but also in safeguarding the welfare. We truly appreciate the continued support, especially during the festive season,” he shared.

The Chinese New Year Celebration with Community highlights PIC’s enduring presence in Pengerang, not merely as an industrial hub, but as a long-term partner invested in the people around it. A decade on, the initiative affirms that true progress is measured not only by growth, but by the lives touched and the trust built over time.
