Pengerang, Johor, 28 August 2016 – PETRONAS today recorded a milestone achievement with the completion of the roof air-raising for two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanks at the LNG Re-gasification Terminal 2 (RGT2), located within the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) here.
Two steel dome structures were pneumatically thrusted to a height of 53 metres closing the most critical activity in the LNG tank construction towards reaching full completion as planned.
"The achievement is not only significant to the development of RGT2, which is expected to commence commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2017, but it also complements the overall development progress of the PIC scheduled for start-up in the first quarter of 2019," said RGT2 Project Director, Encik Md Shah Mahmood.
Both LNG tanks are 88 metres in diameter with roof structures that reach 11.73 metres high and weigh 1,040.1 tonnes, among the largest and heaviest in South East Asia. The roofs were assembled at ground level inside the respective chambers during the early stages of the tanks' construction, while their walls were constructed concurrently.
The air-raising of each roof took about 3 hours respectively. Air pressure of 188 millimetre Aqua (mmAq) was used to force the cover from the bottom to the top of the tank, with an average ascending rate of 200 millimetres per minute. This was followed by 5 hours of welding works to secure each roof into position.
The RGT2 is designed and developed to offer LNG unloading and reloading, storage, handling and regasification, with a capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).
The two LNG tanks, each with 200,000 cubic metre (m3) storage capacity, will help the RGT2 provide primary gas supply to the Pengerang Cogeneration Plant (PCP) and other facilities within the PIC.
As an effort to augment the availability of gas in the country, the RGT2 is also connected to the Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) system via a 72-kilometre Pengerang Gas Pipeline (PGP).
Present to witness the milestone achievement were PETRONAS Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Downstream, Encik Md Arif Mahmood; Malaysia's Energy Commission Regional Director for Johor, Encik Idris Jamaludin; PETRONAS Vice President for Group Project Delivery, Encik Zakaria Kasah; PETRONAS Vice President for Refining and Trading, Encik Mohamed Firouz Asnan; and Project Director for Gas and Power, PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn Bhd (PRPC), Ir Pramod Kumar Karunakaran.
The RGT2 is developed by Pengerang LNG (Two) Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture among PETRONAS Gas Berhad, Dialog Group Berhad and the Johor State. Its main contractor for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) is a consortium comprising of Samsung C&T Corporation, Whessoe Engineering Ltd, Science-Tech Solutions Sdn Bhd and Samsung C&T (KL) Sdn Bhd. The appointed LNG tank civil sub-contractor is VSL Engineer (M) Sdn Bhd and LNG tank mechanical sub-contractor is Donghyup (M) Sdn Bhd.
