PENGERANG, JOHOR, 26 September 2024 – PETRONAS, together with PETRONAS
Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn Bhd (PRPC) recently organised the Discover
PETRONAS @ Schools (DPS) roadshow in Bandar Penawar, drawing participation from more
than 200 secondary school students from 18 schools in Kota Tinggi.
DPS, an interactive and experiential programme that focuses on Technical and Vocational
Education and Training (TVET), engages secondary school students, preparing them with
valuable insights and skills needed for energy industry.
The roadshow featured key highlights such as hands-on training in welding, scaffolding,
machine cutting, and coding & robotics for the students. These activities were showcased
through interactive exhibitions, alongside career-sharing sessions led by industry and
academic experts.
Supported by over 50 school counsellors, instructors and volunteers, the programme was
organised in collaboration with the Johor State Education Department, with the aim to equip
the state’s youth with practical skills that would be able to enhance their contributions to the
workforce.

Ghani said, "PRPC recognises our responsibility to collaborate with the state government in
developing a skilled and competent talent pool for the energy industry, with the ultimate goal
of enhancing the well-being of the Pengerang community.
Hence, through the #ForPengerang initiative, a key effort under our Powering Knowledge
pillar, we are dedicating resources to ensure the youths of Kota Tinggi are able to find
employment close to home and return as skilled professionals, particularly to serve the
industry as well as Pengerang,” he said during the opening ceremony of DPS.
SMK Pengerang Utama counsellor Suzana Morsudi, expressed her appreciation for the
roadshow, highlighting the valuable practical education it provided, especially in career
planning and TVET pathways.
“DPS helps students to make more informed decisions about their career options, and I hope
more students from other schools will have the chance to attend similar roadshows in the
future,” she said.
16-year-old Ahmad Muszaphar Rosli who attended the roadshow said, “It is exciting to get
hands-on experience with how welding and scaffolding works are done on-site. This exposure
helps us to understand the skills required and the practical aspects of careers in the energy
industry. While learning about these jobs in theory is valuable, personal experience provides
a deeper level of understanding,” he said.
The DPS programme was also supported by Johor Petroleum Development Corporation
(JPDC), Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP), Akademi Binaan Malaysia
(ABM), Institut Latihan Perindustrian Pasir Gudang (ILPPG), Politeknik Tun Syed Nasir
(PTSN), Enproserve (M) Sdn Bhd, Highbase Strategic Sdn Bhd, Shapadu CR Asia Sdn Bhd
and Sciencetech Solutions Sdn Bhd.
PETRONAS, celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year remained committed to shaping the
future through strategic investments in TVET and human capital development. This effort also
supports the national policy aimed at closing the gap between education and employment,
ensuring a future-ready talent pool for emerging technologies.
