Cypark and PCG Join Forces to Develop Smart Waste-to-energy Projects in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, 10 October 2019 – Cypark Resources Berhad (Cypark) and PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) today announced their collaboration in the development of Solid Waste Modular Advanced Recovery and Treatment (SMART) Waste-to-Energy (WTE) projects in Malaysia at the 10th International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2019, in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The exchange of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Cypark’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Daud Ahmad and PCG’s Head of Manufacturing, Encik Mahadzir Rani, was witnessed by Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (Mestecc), YB Yeo Bee Yin and Executive Chairman of Cypark, Tan Sri Razali Ismail.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both Cypark and PCG will evaluate potential collaboration on waste to energy projects, including establishment of WTE plants.

Cypark, the market leader in Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy and Green Technology businesses in Malaysia, has pioneered Malaysia’s first SMART WTE plant in Ladang Tanah Merah, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. PCG, the petrochemical arm of PETRONAS, and a leading integrated chemicals producer in Malaysia, is keen to realise SMART WTE projects in Malaysia as part of its initiative to provide solutions for effective plastics waste management.

The collaboration is driven by the Malaysian Government’s objective of having at least one WTE facility in each state.

“Cypark is looking for a strategic partner in ensuring our long-term business sustainability. We are honoured to collaborate with PCG to develop WTE projects that contribute to the nation,” said Tan Sri Razali Ismail.

“The MoU aims to establish our collaboration in WTE projects, particularly in setting up plants in Malaysia to process municipal waste for electricity generation. We are able to leverage on each other’s knowledge, experience and capabilities while identifying and exploring commercial opportunities in relation to the provision of solid waste management,” he added.

Commenting on the partnership, PCG Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sazali Hamzah said: “We look forward to this strategic collaboration as it is in line with our initiative towards New Plastic Economy in support of the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals.

“This MoU marks our second partnership in realising our aspiration to be a solutions partner in addressing plastics pollution in Malaysia. Earlier in June, we entered into a partnership to jointly perform a feasibility study to establish a facility that converts plastic waste into crude naphtha for the production of recycled virgin-quality plastics.

“We are committed to support the country in developing a Circular Economy Roadmap through the ‘Malaysia Plastics Pact’ by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change,” Sazali added.
