Galeri PETRONAS Launches ‘Alegori’ Publication Documenting Malay Cultural Heritage in Classical Manuscripts

2022 Media Release - 18 Jan

GALERI PETRONAS yesterday launched a publication to complement its ongoing ALEGORI: Contemporary Art Expressions from Malay Manuscripts exhibition which explores the concepts and metaphorical thinking derived from classical Malay manuscripts.

The ALEGORI publication, a collaborative effort between GALERI PETRONAS and the Malaysian Institute of Translation & Books (ITBM), is a collection of essays from Malay manuscripts that reflect the original thinking and wisdom of the Malay society.

The publication examines the ancient laws and practices entrenched behind strong values and culture that remain prevalent in society’s current pursuit of modern civilization.

Officiating the launch of the publication, PETRONAS Chairman Tan Sri Sidek Hassan said: ”GALERI PETRONAS is honoured to launch the ALEGORI Publication today as part of our continuous commitment to our ‘Amanah’ and our responsibility to create a positive environment for Malaysians to truly embrace our arts and cultural heritage.

“This publication delves into detailed expositions from various subjects and practices of a civilisation ranging from history; law and jurisprudence; weaponry and craftsmanship - - to laws of nature which are advanced into medicinal, seafaring and astronomy. These are subjects which are still prevalent today in pursuit of contemporary civilisations with views and approaches deeply rooted in the rich grounds of values and culture. Values and culture are two of the very essential foundations of PETRONAS’ own pursuit of excellence since its inception.”

Attending the launch was Sasterawan Negara Professor Emeritus Dr. Muhammad Hj Salleh and PETRONAS Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Zahariah (Liza) Abdul Rahman.

A total of 11 local and regional writers from various institutions contributed to the publication. The ALEGORI publication is available for purchase at the GALERI PETRONAS Gift Shop. About THE ALEGORI Exhibition
