Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team Crowned 2015 World Constructors' Champions

2015 Media Release - 11 Oct

11 October 2015, Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA – The MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team secured the 2015 FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Championship* at the Russian Grand Prix on Sunday (11 October), following Lewis Hamilton’s win, the team’s twelfth victory of the season.

The 2015 title is the second consecutive Constructors’ title for the team and PETRONAS. It follows last year’s victory, and was achieved with four races of the season remaining, underlining the team’s continued success throughout another dominant campaign.

PETRONAS – both Title Partner and a Technical Partner to the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team – is particularly delighted to secure a second World Constructors’ title, highlighting the collective achievement of the F1 team, PETRONAS and the team’s other partners. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton remains on course to make it a double celebration, as he continues to lead the Drivers’ Championship. Hamilton, on 302 points following his 1st place finish in Sochi, now has an advantage of 66 points over second placed Sebastian Vettel. Nico Rosberg, is now third in the standings with 229 points.

“My congratulations and thanks go to the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team and everyone who has worked so hard to deliver this year’s World Constructors’ Championship,” said PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin. “Special thanks to Lewis and Nico who go out on track – race in, race out – and make everyone’s hard work and commitment worth it.”

Wan Zulkiflee added that “PETRONAS is proud of its collaborative partnership with the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, and of being a part of this World Championship success. It is an honour to partner with a team that shares our desire and passion for winning on the track, as we work towards our vision to be leading innovators in automotive engine oils development.

“As Title Partner, and in our role as a Technical Partner for the team, PETRONAS has continuously been at the forefront of innovation, developing Fluid Technology Solutions™ that meet the demands of Lewis and Nico; and subsequently everyday drivers on the road. Our Winning Formula, combined with the Silver Arrows’ drive to succeed, is a winning partnership. We are already looking forward to challenging for further honours with the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 Team in 2016.”

The partnership between PETRONAS and Mercedes-Benz dates back to 2010, when the Silver Arrows returned to Formula One™ as a works team for the first time since 1955. Together, PETRONAS and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team collaborated to co-engineer a brand new range of customised fuel and lubricants - PETRONAS PRIMAX, PETRONAS Syntium and PETRONAS Tutela - that have provided a competitive edge in securing consecutive FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Championships in 2014 and 2015, and the FIA Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 2014 (the team currently leads the 2015 Drivers’ Championship with four rounds remaining).

Head of Mercedes Motorsport, Toto Wolff, said, “Success at a World Championship level depends on many critical elements, not least the technical contribution our partners can make. PETRONAS’ commitment and expertise to enable the team to derive maximum performance in this new hybrid era has been an essential factor in our success so far this season. We thank PETRONAS for their help and look forward to the value their partnership will continue to bring in the future.”

PETRONAS Fluid Technology Solutions™ – an intelligent approach to fluid requirements, maximising performance through tailor-made products and expert services – have been instrumental to the team in meeting the challenges of changes to Formula One regulations in 2014. The characteristics of the PETRONAS PRIMAX fuel with Advanced Energy Formula and the way it performs during combustion are key to an efficient, powerful and reliable engine operation; while PETRONAS SYNTIUM lubricants, now with oCoolTech™, play a crucial role ensuring reliable performance and cooling of the Power Unit.

These products are specially designed alongside the Mercedes-Benz F1W06 Hybrid by a team of experts working closely with engineers at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team in Brackley. As a result, PETRONAS PRIMAX and PETRONAS Syntium have provided outstanding efficiency and performance to the team under regulations set by the FIA, requiring cars to run on 30% less fuel.

The same technical expertise delivering fuel and lubricants to Lewis Hamilton’s and Nico Rosberg's F1W06 Hybrid car, goes into developing PETRONAS fuel and lubricants to power everyday road-going cars. Using Formula One as the ultimate test laboratory, PETRONAS’ scientific team applies the same approach in engineering technologically superior and customised fluid solutions for the road, to maximise engine power, efficiency and durability, while reducing fuel consumption.

Since the technical partnership with the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team started in 2010, PETRONAS has introduced PETRONAS PRIMAX fuel with Advanced Energy Formula for road-going cars, including PRIMAX 95 for superior efficiency and PRIMAX 97 for superior acceleration. PETRONAS Syntium with oCoolTechTM engine oil has also been developed to fight excessive engine heat, including the flagship Syntium 7000 engine oil which is factory-fill for MERCEDES-AMG A45, CLA45, GLA45, GT and C 63 road cars.
