KUCHING, 28 July 2025 – PETRONAS today awarded sponsorships totalling RM28 million to more than a hundred deserving Sarawakian students in a ceremony held here today.
The outstanding 2024 SPM school leavers, who came from diverse backgrounds, received the flagship PETRONAS Powering Knowledge education sponsorship to pursue their degrees at top universities locally and overseas.
Drawn from a rigorous selection process involving nearly 9,000 applicants, the recipients were selected for their academic excellence, leadership potential, and active involvement in co-curricular activities. They will be pursuing their tertiary studies in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, economics, law and other industry-related courses at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and other leading local and overseas universities in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, presented the awards to the recipients on behalf of Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, at a ceremony held here today. She was joined on stage by PETRONAS Senior General Manager (Human Capital Expertise), Group Human Resource Management, Akmal Niza Ahmad.
In her speech Akmal Niza said: “Today, we witness the beginning of an exciting journey for more than 100 young and talented Sarawakians, who are taking their first steps towards a future filled with promise, purpose, and endless possibilities.
“At PETRONAS, education has always been central to our nation’s building efforts. Through our Powering Knowledge initiatives, we support wide spectrum of programmes that empower Malaysian from all backgrounds including the B40. This is part of our commitment, reinforcing how we continue to invest in future talents for PETRONAS, the industry and the nation.”
The Powering Knowledge education sponsorship is part of PETRONAS’ ongoing commitment towards education in supporting Malaysia’s human capital development. Since its inception in 1975, PESP has benefited more than 40,000 Malaysian students, including more than 1,300 Sarawakian students who benefitted from the sponsorship since 2003.
