KUALA LUMPUR, 10 October 2015 - PETRONAS, and the Association of Women and Wives of PETRONAS (PETRONITA) organised an exciting family event, the Orchid Fun Run & Ride, in conjunction with the official launch of Hari Sukan Negara today.
Spearheaded by PETRONITA, the event saw approximately 3,000 cyclists and runners comprising PETRONAS staff and members of the public flagged off for a 3.7km circuit from the KLCC Park.
The event was officiated by KLCC Property Holding Berhad’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Hashim Wahir, together with PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin and PETRONITA President Datin Azura Ahmad Tajuddin.
Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, YB Khairy Jamaluddin made a special appearance at the event and participated in various activities, including a fitness demonstration, a flashmob and stenciling of #tanahairku for a PETRONAS campaign to promote national unity and social cohesion.
Aside from showing support for the national sporting event, participants of the Orchid Fun Run & Ride also raised a total of approximately RM80, 000 in aid of the National Cancer Council of Malaysia (MAKNA), National Heart Institute and the Pediatric Unit of Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). The contribution was presented to representatives from MAKNA, National Heart Institute and HUKM by Datin Azura, witnessed by Datuk Wan Zulkiflee.
Aside from the Orchid Fun Run & Ride, adults and children who came to the KLCC Park were treated to a host of activities conducted by GALERI PETRONAS, PETROSAINS, Prince Court Medical Centre as well as PETRONITA. A special street art exhibition was also held as part of PETRONAS’ #tanahairku campaign aside from appearance by singers Aitilia Haron and Aizat Amdan.
Elsewhere, PETRONAS also organised other events through its Sports and Recreation Club (KSRP) nationwide. In Selangor, a ‘Sukan 4 Penjuru’ was held, involving employees from PETRONAS regional operations nationwide. Meantime, in Sarawak, the PETRONAS AZAM (Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak) Youth Dialogue was held with more than 150 participants. AZAM is a non-profit organisation that works with youths in various programmes.
Hari Sukan Negara, which will be an annual event, aims to encourage Malaysians to lead a healthy lifestyle, a cause which PETRONAS is committed to. As a responsible corporation, PETRONAS advocates work-life balance and has put in place steps such as, flexible working hours for its employees.
“I would like to thank all PETRONAS staff, sponsors, participants, volunteers and everybody for making this event a huge success. We are overwhelmed by the response, which exceeded our expectations and we are looking forward to organize a similar event in the future,” said Datin Dr Azura.
