TRONOH, 15 May 2016 - PETRONAS today presented education aid worth RM110 million under its flagship PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) to 391 outstanding SPM leavers.
The sponsorship is part of PETRONAS’ ongoing corporate social investment (CSI) commitment towards education and is geared towards supporting Malaysia’s human capital development in enabling deserving students to pursue their tertiary education at top local and international universities.
The sponsorships were presented by PETRONAS President & Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, witnessed by PETRONAS’ Senior Vice President of Group Human Resource Management, Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman, in a ceremony held at the Chancellor Hall of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Perak.
Congratulating all recipients at the ceremony, Datuk Wan Zulkiflee said, “Though times are tough for PETRONAS, we remain committed to sponsor students in furthering their studies as we believe in enabling and empowering individuals as well as communities with the right knowledge, skills and resources to take on global challenges. Our initiatives emphasise knowledge and capability development by providing better access to education and capability building.”
Recipients of the sponsorship will pursue tertiary studies majoring in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, finance, law, and other industry-related courses at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) as well as universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Under the PESP, PETRONAS will support the students beginning from foundation studies up to their first bachelor degree.
According to Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman, “Over the years, PESP has contributed significantly to PETRONAS as well as the nation’s human capability requirements by providing skilled talents primarily in the oil and gas industry and in various fields and disciplines. This has allowed PETRONAS and the nation to meet market and industry demands. By providing these young achievers a platform to launch their dreams and opportunities to realise their full potential, we hope to continue nurturing these talents to develop leaders of tomorrow.”
This year, PETRONAS has received more than 7,500 applications. PETRONAS has set a rigorous selection process which assessed the candidate’s excellence in their academic achievements and their display of high leadership skills and teamwork spirit.
Since its inception in 1975, PESP has benefited close to 35,800 students nationwide with an estimated investment value of RM3 billion.
Apart from PESP targeting Malaysians pursuing undergraduate studies locally and overseas, PETRONAS also offers the Minor Sponsorship Programme to deserving secondary school students in Malaysia and in other selected countries where it operates.
