KUCHING, 18 May 2016 – PETRONAS today awarded scholarships under its flagship PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) to 36 outstanding SPM school leavers from Sarawak. They are among the 391 successful candidates selected from a pool of more than 7,500 students who applied this year.
The sponsorships were presented by, Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and witnessed by PETRONAS Chairman Tan Sri Sidek Hassan and PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Group Human Resource Management Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman, during a ceremony held at a leading hotel here.
Speaking at the ceremony, Tan Sri Sidek said, “Despite the current challenges in the oil and gas industry, PETRONAS remains committed to its education sponsorship programme to ensure deserving students are given opportunities to further excel in their tertiary education.”
This year PETRONAS will allocate RM110 million to fund the studies of the 391 recipients who will pursue tertiary studies in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, finance, law, and other industry-related courses at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) as well as universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Under the PESP, PETRONAS will support the students beginning from foundation studies up to their first bachelor degree.
According to Dato’ Raiha, the PESP has contributed significantly to PETRONAS as well as the nation’s human capital requirements by providing skilled talents primarily in the oil and gas industry, and other fields and disciplines.
“This has allowed PETRONAS and the nation to meet market and industry demands. We will continue providing opportunities for Malaysia’s young achievers to realise their full potential, nurturing these talents to develop leaders of tomorrow,” she said.
The PESP is part of PETRONAS’ ongoing corporate social investment (CSI) commitment towards education and is geared towards supporting Malaysia’s human capital development. Since its inception in 1975, PESP has benefited close to 35,800 students with an estimated investment value of more than RM3 billion.
At the same event, PETRONAS also presented an additional 28 sponsorships to deserving Sarawakian students studying at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) in Sarawak. The sponsorship, under the Program BUDI-PETRONAS, includes yearly educational allowances to pay for learning materials, uniforms and other basic needs of the recipients. To date, some 150 MRSM students in Sarawak have benefitted from this programme.
In addition, PETRONAS also announced the inclusion of two new institutions under its Vocational Institution Sponsorship & Training Assistance (VISTA) programme, namely Politeknik Kuching and Institut Kemahiran MARA Bintulu. PETRONAS later presented sponsorships to 27 selected trainees currently undergoing technical training under the VISTA programme.
