PETRONAS Launches PETRONAS Syntium With Cooltech

2015 Media Release - 21 Mar

21 March 2015, Kuala Lumpur – PETRONAS has unveiled the PETRONAS Syntium with °CoolTech™, its flagship Passenger Car Motor Oil (PCMO) lubricant brand, which has been expertly engineered to fight excessive engine heat to maintain optimum engine performance for a trouble-free drive.

Excessive engine heat is a common problem that is widely underestimated by drivers. The excessive heat inside the engine, which is not visible on the dashboard gauge, is aggravated by modern-day driving conditions such as traffic congestions, driving up steep inclines and acceleration on highways. Consequently and over time, it can damage critical components of the engine and affect driving performance.

“We at PETRONAS are proud to bring to you PETRONAS Syntium with °CoolTech™, our flagship lubricant brand, which has been reformulated to fight excessive engine heat, enabling drivers like you and I to enjoy a trouble-free drive,” said Amir HamzahAzizan, Vice President, Lubricants Business of PETRONAS, as well as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Lubricants International (PLI).

“PETRONAS Syntium with oCoolTechTM is uniquely engineered with strong oil chains to effectively absorb and transfer excessive heat from critical engine parts. By stopping engine-damaging heat at its source, drivers can be assured of optimum driving performance,” he added.

The PETRONAS Syntium with oCoolTechTM delivers three key benefits through its outstanding heat dissipation. First, it prevents engine failure by protecting engine components from detrimental wear and tear under high temperature. Second, it delays oil thickening by resisting the oil from oxidising at high temperatures to ensure optimal lubrication of engine parts. Third, PETRONAS Syntium with oCoolTechTMmaintains optimum engine performance by fighting harmful deposit build-up caused by excessive engine heat under extreme driving conditions.

As a testimony of its efficacy, PETRONAS Syntium with oCoolTechTMdemonstrated exceptional heat resisting qualities, exceeding the stringent international standards of the American Petroleum Institute (API), International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) and European Automobile Manufacturer's Association (ACEA).

When tested against the latest and highest service standard specifications, PETRONAS Syntium with oCoolTechTMperformed better resistance to cam wear by more than 70%. In addition, the engine oil delivered better oxidation resistance in excess of 60% and gave better protection against piston deposit build-up by more than 30%.

Elaborating on the science of PETRONAS Syntium with °CoolTech™, Eric Holthusen, Chief Operating Officer of PLI said, “Oxidising or oil thickening as the consequence of frequent exposure to high temperatures will limit the lubricants’ ability to travel around the engine, thus robbing its ability to absorb and transfer heat away from the internal engine parts. On the other hand, an engine oil that is too thin is also unable to deliver optimum performance for the engine.”

“This is where the PETRONAS Syntium with °CoolTech™ formulation excels. Its strong oil chains deliver exceptional oxidation stability to protect the engine and ensure minimal oil thickening as the consequence of high operating temperatures, while ensuring lubrication of critical engine components thus preventing detrimental wear and tear. PETRONAS Syntium with °CoolTech™ also maintains engine performance by fighting harmful deposit build-up caused by excessive engine heat,” said Holthusen.

Leveraging on its 20 years of technical experience in Formula One, PETRONAS has developed a range of bespoke race fuel, engine oil and other functional fluids for six seasons with the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.

PETRONAS Syntium, a result of PETRONAS’ continuous innovation, played a crucial role in ensuring a consistent and reliable performance throughout the 2014 season to help the team win the FIA Formula One Constructors’ Championship. This impressive victory is a testimony to the successful collaboration between PETRONAS and the team in redefining fluid technology throughout the years.

“In 2014, the new Formula One regulations required the use of smaller use and more energy efficient engines. Despite the downsizing, the same amount of power is produced, causing significantly more heat being generated inside the power unit, similar to what happens in modern, downsized, turbocharged car engines. This puts a great deal of stress on the moving parts. As such, engine oil plays a critical role to manage the engine’s temperature and prevent heat-related damage,” said NicoRosberg, MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team driver.

“PETRONAS Syntium proved to be a winning formula for us in 2014. Equipped with a unique formulation, it protected our engines against extreme temperatures and maintained optimum engine performance. Given PETRONAS’ expertise, I am excited about the prospect of another outstanding performance this year,” he added.

The key to addressing engines’ needs both on and off the race track lies in PETRONAS’ Fluid Technology SolutionsTM (FTS), which is an intelligent approach to fluid requirements that maximise performance through tailor-made productofferings and expert services. Knowledge and key insights enable optimised development of fuel and lubricants from the laboratories and race tracks to the roads.

“PETRONAS takes great pride in redefining automotive fluid technology with our new product. PETRONAS Syntium with oCoolTechTM is not only another breakthrough, but a timely one in commemoration of PETRONAS’ 20 years of F1 experience in honing our fluid expertise.”

“Currently, PETRONAS Syntium is the trusted lubricant brand for millions of drivers all around the world. It is sold in more than 80 markets globally. Our strong footing in these markets provides us with the right foundation to capture new growth opportunities to seal our position as one of the World’s Top Lubricant Companies in the coming years,” said Amir.

In Malaysia, PETRONAS Syntium with °CoolTech™ will be phased into the market, beginning with selected PETRONAS Stations and PETRONAS LubeXperts automobile workshops, and will be available nationwide from May 2015 onwards.
