PETRONAS' Pengerang Cogeneration Plant Wins 'Sustainable Plant of the Year 2024'

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 October 2024 – PETRONAS’ Pengerang Cogeneration Plant (PCP) was named ‘Sustainable Plant of the Year 2024’ at the recent Asian Downstream Summit Awards in Singapore.

The awards recognised the successful implementation of an innovative, analytics-driven energy efficiency project that enhances operational efficiency, reduces carbon emissions, and ensures plant reliability.

The optimised solution employs a data-driven approach to identify opportunities for improvement in two key areas - System Efficiency and Equipment Efficiency. It addresses variations in steam and power demand to maintain efficient operations around the clock.

PCP Head of Plant, Irsan Yuz Abu Hanifah also attributed the success of the project to a three-step approach - Value Hunting, Solution Development and Deployment, and Change Management.

“This approach led to a notable reduction in fuel gas consumption, helping to lower operational costs and significantly decrease carbon emissions over the course of a year, reinforcing our commitment to environmental responsibility,” he said.

Value Hunting is a domain-led, data-driven diagnostic process that identifies potential value in energy efficiency initiatives. Upon gathering insights, the focus shifts to Solution Development and Deployment, where advanced digital solutions are implemented to optimise performance and enhance efficiency. The approach then emphasises Change Management through a capability programme aimed at advocating carbon awareness among the workforce to establish a culture of energy efficiency throughout the plant.

In addition to carbon abatement efforts, the implementation of this optimised solution also positions the Pengerang Integrated Complex as a competitive player in the energy market, enabling the petrochemical complex to deliver cost-effective energy solutions and offer significant advantages for investors and the wider petrochemical industry.

“While this approach has propelled PCP to win the ‘Sustainable Plant of the Year’ award in the Asian region, we recognise that we still have a long way to go. To drive long-term impact, PETRONAS has launched a capability programme aimed at shifting the mindset of our workforce to contribute to the organisation’s sustainability aspirations,” added Irsan.
