SMK Tamparuli Dedicate NBOS Competition Win to PETRONAS AAY

2016 Media Release - 10 Dec

SMK Tamparuli made their mark once again when they were announced the first runner-up of the inaugural National Innovation Competition (Civil Service Category) organised by National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS), bagging the prize worth RM 20,000 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday.

SMK Tamparuli, winner of PETRONAS All About Youth (AAY) 2015, was nominated by PETRONAS for the National Innovation Competition through their project titled “Awas! Bahaya Di Hadapan” (Caution! Danger Ahead) in June this year. The project saw the students create a flood alert system installed at the low-lying Jambatan Tamparuli (Tamparuli Bridge) for the safety and convenience of the community using the bridge. Built during the colonial era, the bridge is frequently inundated by flood water during heavy rain and poses danger to motorists.

Utilising a RM50,000 grant awarded by PETRONAS AAY last year, the team successfully implemented the flood alert system at both Jambatan Tamparuli and Riverbug Kiulu, a popular white water rafting spot among tourists in Sabah. The system is also connected to the nearest police station and alerts will be sent if water rises to dangerous levels.

SMK Tamparuli was shortlisted as one of the competition’s 20 finalists and presented their project at the headquarters of Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) at the final judging in October.

Speaking at the award ceremony held in conjunction with the closing ceremony of the Global Entrepreneurship Community 2016, team captain Janet Anne Albert, 17, attributes their success to the PETRONAS All AAY programme. “We dedicate this win to PETRONAS AAY.

We have come a long way since we first started the project. Today we are honoured to be given the chance to compete amongst university students and academic professionals and emerged as one of the winners in the National Innovation Competition,” said Janet Anne.

Endorsed by the Ministry of Education, PETRONAS AAY is a three-year old programme aimed at nurturing well-rounded youths in the areas of social development, community wellbeing and environment.

The programme is part of PETRONAS’ corporate social responsibility efforts that focuses on capability and character building programmes for school children through experiential learning outside the classroom.

As part of PETRONAS’ support towards the NBOS initiative, selected projects from PETRONAS AAY 2014 and 2015 were nominated for the National Innovation Competition. The competition which consists of three categories namely Civil Service, Social Entrepreneurship and For-Profit Business, is aimed at inviting entries of creative and innovative ideas from across the country that meet the National Blue Ocean Strategy.

Present at the award ceremony was Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, Secretary General of Treasury, Ministry of Finance (MOF).
