What is LNG?

LNG or liquefied natural gas is natural gas that is converted into liquid by way of cooling.

At a temperature of -162°C (-260°F), the gas is turned into liquid and its volume is significantly reduced, making it easier to transport in larger amounts via ships and trucks.

Once transported, it is then unloaded into regasification plants and terminals which revert it to its gaseous state.

It is now ready to be channeled to use in homes or in various businesses and industries.

Where LNG goes after it's transported

Once LNG is regasified into gas, it is then channeled to multiple sectors that power our daily lives in various ways.

PETRONAS LNG Complex, Bintulu

Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG) was established on 14 June 1978, as a joint venture between PETRONAS, Shell, Mitsubishi Corporation, and ENEOS Xplora, becoming Malaysia’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project.

MLNG operates nine production trains at the PETRONAS LNG Complex (PLC) in Bintulu, Sarawak, dedicated to safe and reliable LNG production for clients in Japan, South Korea, China, and other regions.

Spanning 303 hectares, the PLC is among the world’s largest LNG facilities in a single location, with a capacity of 29.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), inclusive of boil-off gas reliquefaction facility, translating into potential deliveries exceeding 400 LNG shipments annually.

PETRONAS Floating LNG

PETRONAS operates two floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facilities, PFLNG SATU and PFLNG DUA, enabling efficient production of LNG from challenging offshore natural gas reserves. This positions PETRONAS as the first global energy company to own and operate two FLNG units, enhancing its capability to access remote gas fields while minimising impact to the environment. PETRONAS’ FLNG facilities exemplify its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for efficient and responsible energy production.

PETRONAS Floating LNG

PFLNG SATU — Quick Facts:

* 300m in length

* Water depths: Up to 200m

* Production capacity: 1.2 MTPA of LNG

* Achievements:

-- First gas on 14 November 2016

-- First LNG drop on 5 December 2016

-- First LNG cargo on 1 April 2017

-- Achieved 100th cargo delivery in December 2024

-- Successfully relocated to the Kebabangan Gas Field, 90km offshore Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

PFLNG DUA — Quick Facts:

* 333m in length

* Water depths: Up to 1500m

* Production capacity: 1.5 MTPA of LNG

* Achievements:

-- First gas on 6 February 2021

-- First LNG drop on 15 February 2021

-- First LNG cargo on 24 March 2021

-- Achieved 100th cargo delivery in June 2025

-- Officially named by Prime Minister of Malaysia on 27 November 2019

* Moored at the Rotan Gas Field, 140km offshore Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

Gladstone LNG, Curtis Island

Gladstone LNG (GLNG) is one of the world’s first unconventional gas processing plants, processing coal steam gas into LNG for export. Established on 13 January 2011 as a joint venture between Santos, PETRONAS, TotalEnergies and KOGAS, GLNG is a major integrated LNG development in Queensland, Australia, with a production capacity of 7.8 million tonnes per annum, providing customers with access to a diversified source of LNG supply to support their long-term energy needs.

Gladstone LNG, Curtis Island

Quick Facts:

* Integrated CSG to LNG project

* More than 5 Tcf of natural gas resource

* Active drilling programme of greater than 300 wells per year

* Production capacity: 7.8 MTPA with each train carrying 3.9 MTPA

* 420 km underground 42” Gas Transportation Pipeline (GTP)

* Achieved 1000th cargo delivery in July 2026

Egyptian LNG, Idku

For more than two decades, Egyptian LNG (ELNG), has been a reliable pillar in PETRONAS’ global LNG portfolio through a joint venture with Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), Egyptian Natural Gas (EGAS), TotalEnergies, and Shell Egypt. Located in Idku, approximately 50 km east of Alexandria, ELNG operates two liquefaction trains with a combined capacity of 7.2 million tonnes per annum.

Situated approximately 90km offshore in the Nile Delta, ELNG operates in the West Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) with proven gas reserves and a daily production capacity of 400 million standard cubic feet, playing a pivotal role in the regional gas landscape.

Egyptian LNG, Idku

Quick Facts:

* Two storage tanks at 140,000m3 capacity each

* 2 trains with 3.6 MTPA capacity each

* 2.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas processed per day

* Longest marine jetty in the region (2.4KM)

* First cargo delivered in 2005

* Delivered 716 LNG cargoes in 13 years (2005 and 2018)

LNG Canada, Kitimat

Located in Kitimat, British Columbia, LNG Canada is the latest addition to PETRONAS’ global LNG portfolio through a joint venture between Shell, PETRONAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation and KOGAS. As Canada’s first large-scale LNG export facility, it operates two liquefaction trains with a combined production capacity of 14 million tonnes per annum.

Strategically located on Canada’s west coast, the facility offers a direct shipping corridor to key North Asian markets, enhancing supply diversity and flexibility to reliably meet customers’ evolving energy needs.

LNG Canada, Kitimat

Quick Facts:

* First LNG cargo departed for Japan on 7 July 2025 via Puteri Sejinjang

* Terminal operates at 35% lower GHG intensity than top plants, 60% below global average.

* PETRONAS, through its subsidiary North Montney LNG Limited Partnership (NMLLP), holds a 25% stake in LNG Canada
