Across these core areas, innovation is applied through a broad spectrum of solutions including digital platforms, automation, and development of AI‑powered solutions to boost productivity and efficiency, engineering solutions to enhance operational performance as well as research and development (R&D) on technology in strengthen core business and creating new offerings.
Collaborating for Practical Innovation Solutions
Innovation at PETRONAS is a shared responsibility where business units are expected to drive within their respective areas. Enabled by innovation teams such as R&D programmes, internal incubators, and venture builders, with oversight at Group level to ensure measurable outcomes and alignment with business priorities.
To accelerate innovation and deliver value, PETRONAS adopts various approaches which include building or developing in-house solutions, buying proven technologies from external providers, as well as partnering and collaborating with OGSE companies, startups, industry players, academia, or other partners to co-create solutions.
Through these approaches, PETRONAS is able to address operational challenges, drive value realisation at speed and scale, achieve excellence in productivity, efficiency and decarbonisation, while opening new growth opportunities.Delivering Impact Through Innovation
Collaboration with industry partners is important to PETRONAS’ innovation ecosystem. Multiple platforms facilitate this partnership, including FutureTech, a startup accelerator for disruptive technologies; PETRONAS Innovation Garage (PING), an innovation programme that develops entrepreneurial talent and supports the validation and incubation of new business opportunities; internal R&D and R&D collaboration to co-develop new technologies and solutions; Innovation Gateway @ PETRONAS (iG@P), a technology marketplace connecting OGSE providers with PETRONAS’ needs; SEEd.Lab, a social enterprise incubator nurturing ventures that address social and sustainability challenges; and Standardised Work and Equipment Categories (SWEC), a vendor registration system ensuring quality and compliance.

The Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) is a globally recognised organisation that promotes innovation excellence through certification, capability development and industry best practices. Its annual GIMI Innovation Awards celebrate organisations and initiatives that demonstrate outstanding innovation, impact and value creation across the public, private and social sectors.
PETRONAS Innovation Ecosystem Framework
PETRONAS received the Best Innovation Framework (Silver Award) from the Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) for its Innovation Ecosystem Framework, which aligns innovation initiatives with enterprise priorities through structured portfolio management and disciplined execution.
The framework also builds the organisational capabilities needed to embed innovation in practice, supporting long-term transformation and PETRONAS' strategic ambitions.Social Enterprise Education Lab (SEEd.Lab)
SEEd.Lab received the Most Innovative Project – Social Sector (Silver Award) from the Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) in recognition of its role as Malaysia’s first end-to-end social enterprise incubator programme.
The initiative applies a structured corporate innovation approach, adapted for the social sector to support aspiring changemakers in addressing pressing societal challenges.
Delivered through a strategic partnership between PETRONAS and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), SEEd.Lab has enabled the establishment of 14 sustainable social enterprises and generated positive impact for more than 28,000 individuals across communities.
