PETRONAS, Sarawak Government Honour Local Vendors, Spurring Growth of Local OGSE Ecosystem

KUCHING, 21 July 2026 – PETRONAS and the Sarawak Government today honoured 82 local vendors for their contributions and excellence to strengthen the state’s oil and gas service equipment (OGSE) ecosystem in 2025.

The number of recognised Sarawak-based OGSE vendors has grown steadily since the inaugural Sarawak Commemoration Day in 2022, when 11 vendors were honoured. This year’s total of 82 reflects the expanding pool of capable local industry players in the state. Among those recognised include companies awarded medium-to-complex scope contracts across upstream, midstream and offshore support services, demonstrating their growing capability to undertake higher-value and more technically demanding work within the industry.

This progress is further demonstrated by the participation, role and competitiveness of 715 active registered companies in Sarawak.

The vendors were presented a commemoration plaque by PETRONAS Vice President of Group Procurement, Rashidah Alias, in the presence of the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, and PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management, Datuk Ir. (Dr) Bacho Pilong.

In his speech, Datuk Ir. (Dr) Bacho said, “Today's commemoration is not simply about recognising business achievements, it is about acknowledging the companies, partnerships and people whose capabilities continue to strengthen our industry. Their achievements demonstrate how Sarawak vendors are continuously evolving, expanding their technical capabilities, strengthening operational excellence and creating greater value across the energy ecosystem.”

“PETRONAS will continue to strengthen local industry capabilities to enable competitive and capable vendors to participate, grow and contribute to the energy value chain,” he added.

Since 1975, PETRONAS has invested RM325 billion in the upstream segment and a further RM24.5 billion in the midstream and downstream segments. PETRONAS remains committed to talent development, having contributed RM650 million in education and human capital development programmes over the past 10 years – benefitting more than 980,000 Sarawakians.

PETRONAS remains committed to developing a resilient OGSE ecosystem in Sarawak through various capability-building initiatives. These include the Vendor Finance Programme (VFP), introduced in 2018, and the Special OGSE (SOS) Financing Programme, introduced in 2022. Through these programmes, PETRONAS has facilitated around RM35 million in financing for 51 local OGSE vendors to support them in strengthening financial resilience, improving working capital access and ensuring business continuity amid the evolving energy landscape.

Meanwhile, PETRONAS’ Vendor Development Programme (VDP), which continues to nurture Bumiputera vendors since 1993, has supported the growth of the local industry, with a total of 39 Sarawak-based companies participating and 29 graduating to date. A further 15 companies under the VDPx, an extension of the VDP designed to scale the capabilities of high-performing vendors and amplify the programme’s impact across the industry and the nation.

The PETRONAS Supplier Support Programme has also gained strong momentum in the state, with 173 vendors trained to date. Launched in 2024 in collaboration with the Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3) Greening Value Chain Programme, Bursa Malaysia and the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB), the initiative equips vendors with sustainability capabilities through training, carbon emissions reporting tools, and access to green and transition financing in supporting a just and inclusive energy transition.

PETRONAS and the Sarawak Government remain committed to strengthening the local talent and vendor ecosystem, ensuring the continued resilience of the local OGSE sector in an evolving energy landscape.
