Clean water is vital for human health and survival. Yet for many communities, it remains a daily challenge, impacting basic needs such as drinking, cooking, hygiene and overall well‑being.
Over the years, we have implemented various clean water projects by Yayasan PETRONAS to support healthier living conditions for rural and marginalised communities.
A recent effort includes the successful completion of a gravity-fed water supply and rainwater harvesting system for the villagers of Kampung Tinata Ulu in Kota Belud, Sabah. Implemented in collaboration with Taylor's University, this project includes a four-kilometre gravity-fed water pipeline and central storage tanks, with a total capacity of 3,600 gallons (13,630 litres).
There is also the provision of a clean water supply system for five villages in Pitas, Sabah, which utilises a gravity-fed system as well as solar-powered water pumps. Implemented over 18 months with support from various partners, the project also comprises water catchments, pipes, pump houses, water filters, main storage tanks and collection points.
These simple to operate systems eliminate the need for hazardous, long-distance treks to rivers. The villagers now have a steady supply of clean water that is easier and much safer to access.
To date, our clean water initiatives have benefitted over 650 households from around eight villages in Sabah and Sarawak states.
