PETRONAS Powering Knowledge®

Access to Quality Education Is a Fundamental  Right

Every individual deserves the chance to learn and grow. This is why our Powering Knowledge® initiative is a vital part of our mission to empower people and strengthen communities.

Our commitment to quality and inclusive education includes sponsorships for deserving students, and championing access to STEM and TVET education by strengthening learning pathways for students from all backgrounds, especially those from underprivileged communities.

We also build and upgrade schools in underserved areas, as well as contribute learning equipment and other necessities that enable a conducive learning environment, both locally and globally. These efforts help ensure students have access to nearby learning spaces.

Our Powering Knowledge® initiative is a key pillar of PETRONAS’ education agenda, which focuses on preparing Malaysia's future workforce through quality education and nurturing a high-impact talent pipeline. It is also closely aligned with national frameworks that include the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025; the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan, 2026-2030 (RMK13); and the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (DSTIN) 2021-2030.

Education Sponsorship

The PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) serves as a cornerstone of our human capital development strategy under our Powering Knowledge® initiative. It is a prestigious, highly competitive Malaysian scholarship that supports outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) school leavers in pursuing foundation and undergraduate studies at top local and overseas universities.

Since its inception in 1975, the PESP has made a monumental impact by benefitting more than 40,000 Malaysian students, backing their academic journeys with a total estimated cumulative investment of approximately RM4.2 billion to date. (note to client: to update with latest stats)

This has empowered deserving students to seamlessly pursue cutting-edge disciplines at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and other elite global institutions, cementing a direct, sustainable talent pipeline for both the evolving global energy sector and Malaysia's broader economic resilience.

Beyond the PESP, we offer sponsorships for top-performing Malaysian students who are currently pursuing or have secured a conditional offer / firm acceptance to pursue degree programmes at approved universities in the United Kingdom.

We also have an ongoing partnership with the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to offer two Malaysian students the opportunity to pursue a one-year master’s degree focused on sustainability studies at a top UK university.

Preparing Fresh Graduates to be Industry-Ready

The Graduate Employability Enhancement Scheme (GEES) is our career and training programme implemented in collaboration with the Malaysian government's Professional Training and Education for Growing Entrepreneurs (PROTÉGÉ) initiative, aimed at improving graduate marketability and fostering young entrepreneurs.

Open to fresh graduates who are currently unemployed or employed in non-relevant areas of their qualifications, GEES is designed to nurture competent, skilled and industry-ready graduates, enabling them to meet the evolving demands of the industry and enhance their overall employability.

Over eight to twelve months, participants undergo a structured training programme that offers a balanced mix of professional soft-skills training, leadership development, entrepreneurial guidance, as well as hands-on, on-the-job training within various operating units of PETRONAS. They also receive a monthly allowance, as well as Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) and Employment Insurance System (EIS) contributions.

More than 8,700 graduates have benefitted from GEES since its launch in 2011.

Upskilling in Various Areas Through Learning Institutions

Our commitment to quality education extends to our industry-recognised learning institutions, including Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Institut Teknologi Petroleum (INSTEP), Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) and the Kimanis Training Centre.

These institutions offer industry-relevant education and training across engineering, energy, maritime and technical skills — contributing to producing top talents for Malaysia’s workforce and providing innovative solutions that enable Malaysians to achieve their full potential.

Capacity Building in STEM and TVET

We strongly believe in the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to build future-ready talent and enhance critical thinking skills among students, particularly in underserved communities.

Our efforts include empowering educators with targeted training, as well as proactive engagement with students that includes equipping them with digital and hands-on skills through experiential learning, vocational programmes and digital literacy initiatives.

We also work closely with the Ministry of Higher Education to ensure that our programmes are aligned with the national education agenda.
